Conversation: “Living under the Sirens” with Daniel Shummer

Last Thursday, June 3, 2021, the Israeli blogger, activist and member of KSI, talked with our members about his experiences in Israel during the last weeks and shared with us his analysis of the political situation in that country.

Dani, as he is affectionately known, arrived with his family in Israel from Panama on April 27, 2021. After two weeks in mandatory quarantine for entering the territory and subsequently testing positive for COVID-19, he finally had the opportunity to leave to enjoy his country on May 10. However, as he commented, “someone had other intentions”, and just that day the operation in Gaza began.

“There is always that kind of tension; Israelis are used to this world where something can always change but no one was expecting that shot from Hamas. During those 11 days, Hamas fired 4,300 missiles, but 1,600 were intercepted by Iron Dome, 1,800 landed in open areas and 680 hit Gaza, killing Palestinians,” Dani shared.

On the other hand, he also explained how in Israel COVID-19 is no longer a threat to society: “When you go outside nobody is wearing a mask, all the commerce is open; people were waiting for it. If you put your mask on they look at you funny.”
