Parashat Vayetze opens with Yaakov’s dream of a ladder extending up to heaven, with angels ascending it. God then appears to him and says that he will protect him on his journey. When Jacob wakes from his dream, he says: “Surely Hashem is in this place, and I did not know.”
That last part: “and I did not know,” is compelling. Jacob grew up in a place of prophecy and holiness; how could he not have known about God’s presence? Jacob thought that encounters with God would only happen in holy places–a Beit Midrash, a Synagogue, etc. However, this dream happens while he is on the run, alone, sleeping outdoors, using stones as protection.
Hashem can appear in unlikely circumstances. Yaakov finds out that Hashem will reveal himself, even if you’re not perfect. God enters our lives wherever we are, even though we feel unprepared or unworthy. In life, you may feel like God isn’t there with you, or that he’s abandoned you. But if you look in the right places, you may find him in the most unexpected places.
¡Mazal Tov para Baruch y para toda su familia!
