Liad:
At the beginning of parashat Shoftim, there is the very famous verse, “Tzedek, tzedek tirdof – Justice, justice you shall pursue,” this is what Moshe commands the people of Israel. He tells them to appoint judges and law enforcement officers in every city.
Shoftim describes the earliest forms of criminal law, laws which are still used and practiced today in most modern societies. For example, if a person committed a crime, the crime should be accurately investigated with evidence from at least 2 witnesses – as in the courts today, a person is considered innocent until proven guilty.
Liran:
I learned that the Torah is not some far-off ideal that is beyond our reach. Instead, it is something down here on earth – something that we all can relate to in our day-to-day lives. My parasha, for example, is really connected to my becoming a Bar Mitzvah.
Becoming a bar mitzvah is all about being responsible for your actions and what you do about them. That does not mean if I do something wrong, I am a bad person because I did not act responsibly. It just means that I am responsible for fixing the problem. (Liran)
