My Torah portion is from Leviticus and is the story of the “escape goat.” Not only is the scapegoat a well-known story giving rise to a phrase that we still use today, but the story of the goat which escapes with our sins is also discussed every year on Yom Kippur.
The escape goat of course gives rise to the modern word “scapegoat” who, rather than bearing our sins, is blamed for the wrongdoings of others (even though they often did not deserve to be). As I read this passage – seemingly every day for the past few weeks! – I came to think that the story is not about whether or not we have sins, but rather the recognition that none of us is perfect, none without faults, but we are all a part of the Jewish community and, as a community, we can move forward together.
